The thing that is funny concerning Madden -- the sole NFL certified video gaming franchise that's more than 34 years old is that, despite its huge popularity, the only thing you ever hear is complaints about it.

The main criticism, repeated often, is that each year's update is a slight upgrade over the last. Since EA Sports has the exclusive license, it's only one company that can develop the "simulation-style" NFL game. Therefore, it is clear that EA Sports is in no pressure to substantially improve the game every year. In 2020, a popular twitter campaign was launched to urge the league's decision to introduce EA as its official partner- #NFLDropEA. Even with the outrage over social media that included coordinated review-bombing on games' Metacritic pages, Madden 21 sales were way up. The Madden 22 of this year Madden 22 did well, too, and Madden remains the top-selling sporting franchise of all time.

The critics are part of a vocal minority, but an entire group whose role is to be extraordinarily vocal. I'm talking about YouTubers, who make their living by stream and record themselves in a game they say they don't like.

The vastness of different YouTubers' focuses shows just how vast the game nowadays. There are YouTubers such as Belton who share videos of their own games or playing of YouTubers uploading tips and tricks; then there are YouTubers who dedicate themselves to slamming on Madden.

This fall, a channel called SOFTDRINKTV released a video of 14 minutes called "The Most Insane Madden of All Time," followed a week later by a 19-minute film titled "Madden NFL 22 is NOT GOOD - Review." They returned to an identical well last week with a video titled "Everything Wrong with Madden NFL 22 (in 16 minutes)."
